For quite a few breast cancer survivors, the annoyance of ongoing hot flashes – in some cases as often as multiple times every day – makes each day a challenge. And although there are a variety of treatment choices available, one surprising therapy is beginning to gain acceptance: acupuncture for breast cancer survivors.
In a recent study, 120 women were provided with a variety of treatments, reporting the number of occurrences and severity of their hot flashes over intervals of 8, 16 and 24 weeks. Not only did acupuncture surpass medications in its ability to give lasting relief, but even a “phony” variation of the acupuncture scored almost as high.
As of now, it’s unclear whether acupuncture is recommended (and effective) for menopausal hot flashes. The symptoms are usually more extreme in breast cancer survivors, who also do not have the option of hormone replacement therapy that other menopausal women might be able to investigate. Anyone considering acupuncture for relief from hot flashes should first check with her healthcare provider.
